I just read the following article:
shadowpress.org/national_id_card.52.html [shadowpress.org/national_id_card.52.html]
This is an outrage! How could something like this be allowed in this country! Our liberties are constantly being taken away. Becoming a bit Big Brotherish, don't you think?

Freedom!! If you're not caught in the commission of a crime, the cops don't have the right to demand ID from you.did it pass?

i believe that it did. The article says that its becoming active as of Jan. 1st 2008. I talked to some people about it, and they said they didn't believe that it will be successful, because of the cost. I seem to remember reading elsewhere though that money will be drawn from other budgets to support it. Ill see if i can find the page, and post it

Heres Something I found. And i quote:
"Congress has appropriated only $40 million to meet the law's requirements, money that homeland security officials have clarified will be given out as grants to develop best practices. States also would be allowed to use 20 percent of their federal homeland security grants, but state officials point out those funds are already dedicated."

"[Montana governor Brian] Schweitzer's letter [to other governors that urges resisting the DHS coercion to comply with the provisions of REAL ID] went out to the governors of Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Maine, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Arizona, Hawaii, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Washington."

It's great to see that some state government's are finally taking up for the rights of their member citizens.

Check out this article: stateline.org/live/details/story [stateline.org/live/details/story]

And more here on the whole issue:

Where the latest news is noted as being:
"Alaska Joins Other States in Rejecting REAL ID System. Just two weeks after DHS granted all 56 states and territories extensions that would allow state licenses and ID cards to remain "valid for federal purposes" past May 11, 2008, Alaska has passed legislation against the REAL ID national identification scheme. SB 202 (pdf) states, "A state agency may not expend funds solely for the purpose of implementing or aiding in the implementation of, the requirements of the federal Real ID Act of 2005." DHS has said it "made extensions available for states that needed additional time to come into compliance, or to complete ongoing security measures," implying that states that received extensions had agreed to implement the national identification system. However, Alaska is just the latest in a number of states that have declared unequivocally that it will not implement the REAL ID scheme. (April 11)"

Hope more will step up to the plate.
